When one shops online, one gets a virtual card number from the Wallet app along with the CCV, etc.
This number stays with that vendor (if one chooses to have them save the info), and if it's ever attempted to be used anywhere else, G-S knows it's a fraudulent use.
Each time you go to the Wallet app for a card number, a new virtual number will be issued, so no other vendor has the same card number. One can choose not to let them save it 'for faster Express Checkout...' and just get a new number every time visit the vendor is shopped.
The number on the Card's magnetic strip stays the same, obviously, until the Card is replaced.
