You need high voltage overhead wires supplied by high output generating plants.
Boils down to which is cleaner; new electric power stations or burning LS Diesel on
the locomotive to generate electricity.
Then there is the issue of providing power in the various types of "railyards".

The rail yards will have to get by with switch engines which can be battery powered. They can have a trolley to extend for recharging when they are not being used.
