I've found recent mowers to be easier to work on for routine maintenance.
The "chokeless" walk-behind one I'm using now just has to have its float bowl and carb jet cleaned start of the season...and the nut securing the float bowl is also the carb's jet...carb cleaner makes short work of assuring both the bowl and jet are cleaned out and ready to go.
Older mower designs often required near complete disassembly of the carb to get it clean enough to fire up beginning of each season.
