NVME on a PCIe card is definitely faster. I personally don't see the need. It's not like I sit around and lament my 2.5" SSD (also on a PCIe card) as being too slow. Then again, maybe I don't know what I'm missing.
A while back when my SSD died and I had to replace it would have been the time to switch to NVME, except I just wanted to get the machine back up ASAP and I walked into to Best Buy and bought a replacement. I didn't want to wait for something to be shipped plus I had old firmware that I didn't want to futz with at the time.
