Even if the sorters were online, they'd have huge backlogs.
It used to be that postal workers were encouraged to work overtime to ensure that mail went through on time. Now, they not only are not allowed to work overtime, but hours of operation have been scaled back and there are fewer trucks moving the mail. Combine that with the staffing and logistical problems of the pandemic, and letting mail stack up to prioritize ballots in November, and budget-cutbacks across the board reducing new hires and you have a big f-ing mess.
