Here in MN, they’ve made a nice comeback. We don’t have a ton of ranching in northern MN, and the native tribes have been supportive of the conservation efforts.
What we do have too many of (IMO, and as I understand) is deer. And the wolves will help that.
The story you linked, made me curious enough to find out more about something they referenced in the article... and so I found this, which had a better/fuller explanation, and also raises the question of why we can't have the wisdom of the Ojibwe:

Original man, the last living being placed on Earth by the Creator, was directed to travel across the land and name all the plants, animals and natural features.
