So, loading someone into Saddam Hussein's massive cannon, and firing them up would make someone an astronaut?

To me, taking an active part in the actual flight is crucial. Strapped in as living cargo shouldn't count. Being a payload specialist and doing repairs on the ISS, or a satellite should count for example. Your participation is active, not passive.
