Has NATO become the modern Neville Chamberlain?"
It's a weak analogy.
The rap on Neville is that he was cowed by the desolation of a recent (WWI) catastrophe and would do anything to avoid another such. This was probably true.
He wasn't faced with MAD - we are.
Yep. This is a whole different type of thing. It's like we're ignoring the path to this moment.
Ukraine would have become a member of NATO but for.... Russia would have suffered major sanctions for interfering in US elections but for... We effed that up and now Ukraine has hospitals being bombed while millions flee destruction.
Russia is being flattened with crippling sanctions. Putin game-planned all of this so he's prepared to overtake Ukraine. I hate to say this, but so far up to this point he's being nice about it. The more Ukraine resists, the harder it's gonna be. Putin has nothing to lose. If he were really smart, he'd withdraw because there's no way his people can endure these sanctions. Putin's problem is gonna be Russia. He needs to quit asap.
Moving forward, the only way to avoid this level of conflict (retaliate) is to make sure this (tfg and the like) never happens again. Hope the Russian people can take their country back without suffering too much.
