I'm with Robert- it's pretty easy to put a new NVME SSD in those-I've done it half a dozen times. You can buy a used Apple SSD on eBay; make sure you get a four-lane one, for speed. Or you can buy a non-Apple and an adapter-put a TB in there for about $100!
I did need to reinstall the Apple SSD for upgrades to the OS, but I only do that once a year or so, and it doing the swap (new out, old in, old out, new in) takes maybe half an hour. I don't screw the back on while the os is updating.
