I suspect you had to put the Apple SSD back due to firmware updates or Full OS upgrades. I’ve had no problems with OS and security updates with the OWC drive in my machine. It remains to be seen if I’ll have to put an Apple SSD back into my MBPr when I do a full OS upgrade to Catalina or newer.
