The situation needs the simplest solution. I would agree that there may be more wrong than the slow drive. I have High Sierra on one spinning (7200rpm) drive in my Mac Pro, and while it does take it a long time to fully boot compared to Sierra and earlier, once it does fully start up it’s fine.

I am wondering why her internal drive has a Time Machine icon. Could the machine have begun backing up to the internal after the external drive went out of commission? It was only gone for a couple of days. I know nothing about Time Machine: I use Carbon Copy Cloner and ChronoSync.
