Why can't the powers just split the difference and move it 30 minutes?
That's what I've advocated for, it makes us seem ridiculous to the rest of the world that doesn't do this seasonal dance.
What rest of the world do you refer to? Most of Europe uses DST, and a number of countries in the Southern hemisphere use DST for their Summer. There are some countries that have never used DST, most of them are along the Equator and don't have the large seasonal differences in length of daylight.
I used to correspond frequently with people based on Japan, and they didn't understand our predilection for changing times twice per year.
So, based on contact with one country then, not the rest of the world. Japan did follow DST for several years from 1948 to 1951. Occupied Japan?
The people I dealt with were an Aussie, two Japanese amd a Brit (I think). None seemed familiar with changing times twice per year.
During part of the occupation period, no information on if DST was imposed by the US or left to the Japanese to put in place and later remove. DST there ended before the occupation did.
Australia observes DST in the southern and eastern regions where most of the population lives. So why the Aussie was unfamiliar with it may depend on what part of the country they were from. However the entire country observed DST during both World Wars. Queensland and Western Australia have observed DST off and on over the last 40 years. Nearby New Zealand has observed DST since 1974.
As for the Brit, the UK has been observing DST for over a century, known there as British Summer Time.
