The public displays of support for Tesla recently from the likes of Trump and Cruz might have something to do with it...polarizing political figures trying to prop up a publicly traded company that is headed for the crapper in the markets because of it's CEO's politically-motivated behavior in dismantling the federal government. People rejecting the car company feels very much like a political statement. And in some cases, the only type of power that some people feel like they can do something to affect the person they see as causing these issues.
For better or worse, the people/figureheads/leaders that are at the top of big companies typically don't operate in a vacuum. We can see what they say and do, and people are certainly within their rights to choose to send their business elsewhere if they feel it will make a statement.
