Sherlock Holmes is having his kitchen remodeled.
He wants a nice slate tile backsplash for the counters, and asks Watson to go find him a sample or two.
Watson is gone for a couple hours and returns with a sample. He hands it to Sherlock, who contemplates it for a moment and then says, "Watson, I asked for a slate sample. This is shale."
Dr. Watson replies, "What's the difference?"
Sherlock replies, "It's sedimentary, my dear Watson."
