Yes, it's insane and it doesn't make any sense. Every year, I like to "extend" my Prime membership by not auto-renewing and taking advantage of the cheap trial when needed and then finally not purchasing the full year until I really need to.
This triggers AMEX to send me a new card with each change (Prime ending or starting) which is especially annoying because they are metal cards and they don't send me the envelopes anymore to send the old ones back. So the new card won't auto enroll you in Prime and they'll likely send you ANOTHER new card when your trial ends...
I've taken to not even activating the replacement cards until I'm done with all my changes and have the "final" card for the year.
