Because the silicone pad is compressible, the pad makes contact with the case across its entire surface. The top is fairly flat compared to the rest of the case, which helps. The pad does not stick sliding into the case because of the matte black coating.
Evidence of its efficacy is that the temp of the case gets hotter than my other cases, and the reported temp of the SSD in Hard Disk Sentinel is lower than my other cases.
