Which fuel is the first viable alternative as gasoline prices edge up?

Biodiesel certainly seems the way to go for Autos and trucks. I don't see why big agriculture wouldn't be behind biodiesel, seems like you wouldn't have to worry about what your crops looked like if they were simply being turned into oil.

I have a surfing friend that has had a biodiesel conversion done to his 4x4 truck that he uses for surf trips to Mexico & South America. He never has any trouble finding fuel, if he can't get any diesel he just pulls in to the local market and buys a few gallons of cooking oil to get him down the road!
