OK nothing has helped.
I don't think this is a smoothing/aliasing issue since the text does not look jagged or pixelated. It looks smeared or blurry especially the vertical lines. If you look at it very closely it is that the pixels adjacent to the black pixels are illuminated but they should not be. From far away it is not noticable.
I imagine after I use it exclusively for a week or so I will not notice it. I also think that driving it via DVI would help. Rather than buy an ADC to DVI adapter I would like to buy a used video card that would fit either the AGP or PCI slot. It would be nice to have something that supports Core Graphics (Quartz). I think I have the nomencalture right. I don't need the Core Image stuff, just the quartz extreme.
Wait, I wonder if a getting Quartz extreme support alone would fix the problem. I seem to remember that it rendered text more accurately or something. Actually, I am in way over my head here so any advice would be appreciated. I can't keep all the Quartz nomenclature straight.
I tried to take a non-compressed picture (so there would be no artifacts) but I got a moire (sp?) pattern.
So should I look for a GeForce2 MX or something from ATI? Is it better to use the AGP slot or the PCI slot? And is there a flashed PC card that would fit my needs that's available pretty cheap? I will probably be buying used on eBay or if any of you have something then PM me.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help.
