If you'd just bother to experiment a little with iCal, or perhaps -- GASP! -- skim through the help file, you would find that it is, in fact, as easy to use (if not easier -- I'll wager there's no intelligent "repeating events" ability for example) than your old OS 9 program *and* better/more powerful.
no, it's not better. i just played with iCal again. to list separate items i have to type command-N. it had better be short or i have to go over to the side panel for text to wrap. with my dinky OS 9 calendar i simply type, hit return for the next line in that day's box and type some more.
there are no repeating events. this is a log i enter each day. i don't know what schoolwork we will or will not accomplish until the day is over.
Week View works a little better but it still takes a bit more manipulation than the task should warrant and i prefer being able to see a month at a time.
for scheduling my own life i'm quite happy with the Palm Desktop software. that doesn't suit my needs for this type of calendar either.
