I'm pretty sure that when it reverts, it reverts to the actual original *unless* you've edited the original with an external editor such as Photoshop since you imported the image, in which case it should revert to the last saved version.

Answer: If you make any changes to a photo in iPhoto, a copy of your original photo is created and stored in the iPhoto library in case you need it. So if you crop, remove red-eye, or make other changes to a photo, you always have the ability to return to the original image by selecting Revert To Original from the iPhoto Edit menu. You can also make a duplicate of the original photo for extra protection or to try out different versions. Just click the photo and press Command-D. An exact duplicate will appear in the iPhoto library.
