The Linux desktop

I disagree with Elmo. I will agree that its default configuration sucks. I shrink it down until it is a tiny strip on the side. I see no reason for the dock to eat up the entire screen. Anyway, back to the original question...

What windowing system is the computer using? KDE or Gnome most likely. In Gnome, you can install a package called Gdesklets. It enables you to turn on features that are similar to Widgets. One of them is very similar to the dock. The packages are available from the reposistories that are available in Ubuntu. I've never installed it on anything else. I think that KDE has something similar available as well. It may even be a feature of KDE as KDE seems to be all about eye-candy and tweaking the desktop.
