Sitting through a boring wedding is the price you pay to get to go to the reception. If they didn't want you to have to come to the wedding, they would have eloped and then thrown a big party after they returned. Which, BTW, is what we did.
It is bad form, IMO, to skip the wedding and only go to the reception. That is the same thing that I told my daughter a couple of years ago when she was invited to a lot of her friend's Bar and Bat mitzvahs. If you are going to the party later, then you have to go sit through the service that morning. Many of her friends would just cut the ceremony and only go to the party, which I thought was wrong. Just my opinion, though.
