I figured it out. I couldn't use the airport extreme password. I had to select "equivalent network password" from the base station menu and then enter that under 104 bit hex.
It works now.
by the way, is there any negative to leaving the Airport Extreme base station configured for 80211.b and g compatibility compared to g only?
