Check the hoses that connect to the heater core. In a couple of older cars that I had, these hoses cracked and would leak. A biotch to replace working in a confined space. On my first car, the original owner cut off the water hoses from the heater core and sealed them instead of replacing them. (really stupid)
If the water was leaking onto the manifold, you would smell it.
