Not onto the manifold, into it. If the crack is small, the antifreeze is vaporized and then burned off in the catalytic converter. So the smell only would show up for a short time before the cat heats up. A larger crack will exceed the capacity to burn it off, but is pretty obvious with water dripping out the tailpipe.
