How I got broadband from a mile away
#30
I'm going to assume you researched satelite internet and and also cellular internet? Both are very inexpensive. What is the advantage of the setup you went with?

As Dick pointed out, satellite is not only pretty slow, it's downright painful to use. Truly, a strong dialup connection is more useful for most web surfing than satellite. The latency (pause between clicking a link.... and when it finally shows up) is enough to make one commit suicide.

Wireless EVDO cards for laptops are very cool. But they realistically only work for one Mac. We have 3 in our house, plus visitors who'd want to pick up a wireless signal through the house. Also, there's the speed issue: PCMCIA cards average 400 to 700 Kbps. As an addict to speed, that wouldn't make day much fun.

Last note: just found out that I can get an upgrade program from Comcast that allows over 8 mg download, 1 mg upload. They're willing to drop the price to $125 month, so I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for it.
