I don't run any virus protection on my mac, and in past threads here, I got the impression that many others don't use it either. I don't think we are being naive, but we are being cheap and/or lazy.
Since you are setting this up new from scratch, you should consider first setting up an administrator account first during the initial startup/configuration of the machine, but don't use that account generally. Then set up a second user account for you to use day to day. That gives an added level of security, since you are not logged in as an admin when using the computer, and also gives you a "clean" account to go back to for testing if anything does happen to your user account.
I don't know if the security purpose of this setup is defeated if you give that second user the ability to admin the machine (which is how I have it right now). That is easier and more convenient than having to switch users to install software, etc. But I can always turn off my ability to admin the machine if I want to, using the admin account.
