I'd wager (not much, but some) that when bought into a store you'd be more likely to get it replaced.
At the store you can quietly pester the Genuis with oddball anecdotes (some of which you've listed above) until he gets bored enough to give you a new one so that he can move on to the next customer.
But a guy at a bench with a stack of them in front of him is just as likely to claim it's OK if he can't quickly find anything amiss. Barring that, you might need to wait until it stops for good.
