bgnr-
u made me smile thinking about all the terrible handling american wagons i have driven. 1966 ford galaxie, 1961 falcon wagonairre (i luved that car!), 1971 chevy impala (bought by my dad from a convent that closed down so my brother and i called the chevy the nun-mobile because of where it came from and what it put out-none!)
i maybe embarrassing myself but i'll stand up in front of the court of popular opinion (or this forum) and declare proudly, the BEST driving stationwagon i ever drove was...
a 505 Peugeot wagon.
i've had 5 of them over the past 14 years (mostly had 2 of them at a time)
man, the rear-wheel drive in combination with a very nicely balanced stationwagon made for a great driving experience, meaning nothing like the american wagons u rightly referred to. the 505s were slightlu underpowered, and u needed to know peugeots in order to keep them on the road-ask psurfer-another peug guy on this forum-but once the 505 got rolling it could handle anything, a true touring classic. imho.
say what u will about the french
say what u will about french wine
say what u will about french cooking
say what u will about the french and jerry lewis
just don't include the 1985-1991 505 Peugeot stationwagons in that group!
be well

[quote Racer X][quote BigGuynRusty][quote robfilms]i much rather have the road handling of a decent stationwagon.

Good handling, American Station Wagon?!?!
I have never read those words in the same sentence unless it was a punchline for a joke.
I love wagons, I have owned several over the years, including a Dodge with a 440 and a four speed. After a suspension overhaul 16X8 steel cop car wheels and fat radials it handled pretty damn good, but not from the factory.
Most station wagons of yore cornered on the rocker panels.

I have a buddy with a '72 Buick Sportwagon (Skylark) with a big block, 5 speed and some serious suspension work. But once again, not from the factory.
and my '99 Sable is just fine. But it does have the 4 valve motor.
Now if they make a SHO version of the 500........
