I see, the outback does look a bit shorter, but I wasn't sure if that was ride height or interior dimensions.
I'm sorta looking at getting an Outback (or perhaps now a Forester) myself, one requirement being able to carry large amounts of band equipment. In my current car (Toyota Cressida Station Wagon) I routinely fit (2) 4x12 guitar cabs, (1) 4x10 bass cab, two guitar amp heads, one guitar floor board, one rackmount bass head, 20" bass drum with pedal, 3 guitars and one bass, bin with cables, and a cymbal bag along with whatever drum stands I can squeeze in around the edges.
It's a lot, but it fits well and I haven't seen another car where I can fit both 4x12 cabs stacked one on top of the other (both laying face up) and slide them in all the way with the seats down. Other cars have a shorter hatch opening, but it sounds like the Forester might be just fine.
