While Toyotas are generally more fuel efficient than than their American counterparts, I don't think we can say that as a whole Toyota is across the board concerned about fuel economy.
Toyota gets more credit than they deserve, IMHO, considering they make 2 truck models and 6 SUV models (9 if you count Lexus). Granted they don't lean on their trucks and SUVs for sales the same way that the big 2.5 do, but Toyota's sales of trucks and SUVs aren't hurting either.
Toyota is really just playing it smart and catering to all parties. If you want a hybrid, you can get one; if you want a gas guzzling SUV, they'll sell you that, too.
If I was looking for a hybrid, I think I'd consider the Accord. Honda has still left some enjoyment of driving in their cars. Toyotas are just boring point-A-to-point-B appliances. They don't even have any sports cars anymore. There is no fun anymore at Toyota. They have become just a higher quality Buick - bleh! And even the quality is coming into question these days. So it's just plain old Buick.
Whatever happens to Chrysler, I sure hope they don't kill Jeep. That's their only real differentiator. I don't know why GM would want Jeep, unless they plan to kill Hummer - not a bad idea.
