Yeah, I've been reading up some, and decided to go with a 20". And that's what I have at work, so I'm already used to it. I think it'll be just fine.
20" and 22" widescreens give you less pixels, and it seems 23" or 24" widescreen might not necessarily give you a stellar 8-bit monitor until you go all the way to Apple's 23" ...
So, I placed an order for a Planar PL2010M after reading a few good things about the company. And the monitor does 16.7 mil colors, so I suppose it's 8-bit. $259 at buy.com:

What's odd is they also have other links to the same monitor at higher prices.
