OSX 10.3.9 networking help please
#5
Look at the mac's help (in Finder, Help->Mac Help, or fan-?) (try the Index, letter N, various network topics)

When you get the mac back, you will have to double check the Network settings panel in the System Preferences .

Look at the other macs' Network settings in their System Preferences ... are they running AppleTalk ? If so, you want your mac to be running AppleTalk.

Find out what make & model no. the router is. Check the mfr's specs for the router & verify that it can support AppleTalk protocol/packets. They are different in size and content than the usual TCP/IP packet traffic.

On your mac, start the Network Utility (Applications->Utilities->Network Utility) and attempt to ping a system on your LAN whose IP address you happen to know. If that works, then try pinging another mac on the LAN. If that works, try connecting to that mac. (In the Finder, fan-K will bring up the server connect dialog).

A trip to the Apple Support site and a search for specific networking issues should turn up forum discussions and technotes to read.

There are as many ways for networking not to work as there are systems, routers, servers and protocols on the same network segment as your mac.

That you can get to the Internet (which is strictly TCP/IP) indicates the other macs are expecting your mac to use AppleTalk.

That networking used to 'just work' until the router took a hit, implies that the router used to pass AppleTalk packets but no longer does. It has the ability, but the default configuration after power reset is not to pass AppleTalk.

That's my US$0.02 or less.
