Actually blame Apple, Billy and friends took public domain BASIC and repackaged it then sold it to Apple.
1986 or so when Apple was almost ready to release Apple MacBasic with a beautiful GUI, and very powerful features.
M$ said the would stop licensing the BASIC that was in all of the AppleII ROMs to Apple if they released it.
The AppleII was still supporting Apple.
