Found the answer from Brian Peat, one of the top Keynote gurus:
"The only thing that WILL NOT copy are title boxes and body boxes. My guess is those are the two things you're trying to copy. Also, if you select multiple objects and one of those is either a title or a body box, NONE of the items will copy (the system will beep at you).
It's a pain, but I've found I have to copy the style of the box and then write down the measurements of it and resize the one on the Master based on the measurements of the original, then paste on the style."
