deco, I have Bellsouth ADSL here as well, but no modem (blessed fiber optic in the neighborhood and surrounding areas.)
At any rate it sounds as if you're wanting seamless transition between DSL and dialup as a backup, as necessary. The Network pane is indeed your friend, because you'll store settings for dialup and settings for DSL there as different "locations."
To use dialup you'd select whatever you called your dialup Location name, for DSL, whatever you called your DSL Location name --- either from the Network pane, or you'll see a Location shortcut under the Apple menu to switch between them.
So that's why, if you set it up for DSL, dialup "no longer works" --- you probably replaced your old settings with the new, now the modem can't see Compuserve properly.
I would go to the Locations popup menu within the Network pane and Edit your current dialup settings --- just give it a name like "Compuserve dialup".
For your DSL settings, if you already know them, choose "New Location", same thing, give that a name like "Bellsouth DSL" and Apply (unfortunately I think you always have to Apply to save changes). Now go switch back to the "Compuserve dialup" location, apply so it works again. Clear as mud?
