I think with the cooler weather that the Queen Mary and Aquarium in Long Beach are pretty good ideas as suggested by jdc. The restauraunts at the Pike by the Aquarium are very good as he said, I especially like Gladstones.
However, if you want the beach experience, I think that Huntington Beach Pier would have been my choice for visiting. There is also a 50s diner at the end of the Pier that the kids would like called Ruby's. Plus some shops and stuff on the street up from the Pier.
Seal Beach Pier is nice too. Also has Ruby's on the Pier -- but the Ruby's at Huntington Beach Pier is soooooo much nicer.
