[quote jesse]I tried editing a photo through iPhoto using PS and yes it does edit a copy of the photo keeping the original safe, so basically it works the same, you are just editing your photo in PS or Elements rather than iPhoto.

Jesse, this sounds like a big step forward for me. I just checked and I see that I'll have to reinstall CS2 on this hard drive, since it was wiped when I did a recent erase and clean install. Anyone familiar with my "story" knows I did that to eliminate any software related reasons for the spinning color wheels that I had been experiencing. Happily, I did get my problems fixed
Should I select the other seemingly related Advanced preferences, "Save edited RAW files as 16 bit TIFFs" and "use RAW files with external editor?" Is it necessary to check these preferences?
wave rider, I appreciate your input, but it's almost impossible for me to concentrate on learning anything like this in a school situation or by doing extensive reading. My health prevents me from getting a decent night's sleep, so most of the time I feel exhausted even when I wake up in the morning. Not much of a chance to concentrate on learning such a complicated subject.
I will get CS2 up and running, since AlphaDog indicated that there is no PS Elements 5 for Mac. It's worth giving CS2 a shot, using it as in a bare bones mode that shouldn't require too much experience beyond what I already know. How do I get CS2 to open without also opening Bridge, which I won't need if I'm using iPhoto to organize my pictures?
Learning that I can use CS2 directly from iPhoto without losing the original is a big, big plus for me and I'm very grateful to have learned of this.
