One way to look at it is " how much is it worth to go from your laptop to the newer one?" The do the math.
Otherwise, I think you're right. It is fair to assume that if he is giving you a good price on his he would expect the same favor from you.
If it were me, I'd calculate what you WOULD get for it at resale to another party then suggest that... or perhaps $50 less because of the simpler transaction.
If he wants it for a whole lot less, stick to the original deal for his (cash) and sell yours elsewhere.
