In terms of a complete system, both Nikon and Canon are amazing -- they have the most money for R&D, economies of scale, etc. That said, not to start a Canon-Nikon war, but I find that at the low end, Nikon's SLR bodies seem just a bit more solid and pleasing to use (and a bit more expensive, of course).
