i wouldn't go near DVD-R DL, regardless of brand. DVD+R DL has enough compatibility issues and it's been around for quite a while. DVD-R DL is vastly more problematic in my experience.
For what it's worth, I only use Toast or Popcorn for burning optical media. Definitely more useful and reliable than just Disc Utility. Toast alone is a worthwhile purchase if you don't already own it.
