I don't know anything about Office 2008, but Office 2004 is a great set of programs. I work mostly inside of Word and Entourage, and they are both extremely competent.
Pages is great also, and I often create a manuscript in Word and then open it in Pages to make it look better for printing. Or I might develop a document in Pages and and then decide to switch to Word. Mostly because I know how to handle a 400 or 500 page document better in Word, and do Tables of Contents and such.
There is a great group of programmers at Microsoft with their own mini-corporation that do only Mac stuff.
Just my 2 cents.
