I’d actually consider one if along with the new features it had DVR capabilities and might have even bought one now if it had an optical drive. That way, I could ditch the TIVO, VCR, DVD Recorder and DVD player. One box to handle the chores of all these items. People want less gadgets and the AppleTV doesn’t do enough to reduce the clutter.
For what it’s worth, my Toshiba RS-TX20 can already handle all of the chores I mentioned in the previous paragraph including TIVO downloads and amazon unbox features. It just doesn’t do HD. One box for all of those tasks. The only reason I'm thinking about replacing it is because I'm moving to HD in the near future.
Now, when I think about rentals, the first thing that comes to mind is Video on Demand from cable. If someone has a cable box or a cable box DVR, they have the option to rent movies on demand. No need to buy a separate device for the job.
