He departed very far from any Hulk origin story that I've read and I have not seen any reviews praising the authenticity of his vision.
You miss my point. Lee's vision for the movie was to bring the comic book page to life -- he attempted to recreate the comic book page onscreen. Hence, multiple panels onscreen at once, borders between panels, motion between panels (emulating eyes sweeping across the printed page), et al. Unfortunately, the story suffered for it.
