I remember when Krispy Kreme opened in Los Angeles. The line of cars would stretch for miles ever morning.
People in California thought that Krispy Kreme was an authentic New York style donut and thought they could be cool like New Yorkers if they ate them. The local news stations would give KK free promos and every TV show had a scene with a Krispy Kreme box. It got more coverage than anything else on tv.
As a native New Yorker, I was baffled by it. Dunkin' Donuts is far more prevalent in NY and LA already had plenty of 'em. To me, Krispy Kreme is a primarily Southern phenomenon.
When I left, the craze was still running strong.
