In Minnesota, the older hard drive - based iPods had trouble running in the winter. Our 3G has a prominent but basically permanent home in the living room attached to our sound system.
Haven't purchased anything but nanos since then, and those iPods go everywhere.
We certainly got our money's worth out of the 3G 'Classic', but the nanos are the true 'personal' and mobile music players.
Of course, I think the new iPod touches are really cool, too - now with a full software suite (Apple ungutted them this year with an 'update'.)
You should visit a best buy, Apple, or other iPod store to see the whole lineup before you decide.
