Update re: G4 Tower (Quicksilver) video issue
#10
[quote JoeH]I missed the mention in last night's post that the video card you found once you could run the AHT disk was the Rage 128 Pro instead of the stock Radeon 7500. The Rage Pro is definitely not compatible with most if not all 16:10 wide screen displays. A list of available resolutions is here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58756. Sounds like time to find an inexpensive card that is a little bit newer....
The most sensible option I've looked at is the GeForce4 MX. Of the three the QS shipped with, it's the "middle" choice. I used to own one of these, and remember buying it new, to customize my Sawtwooth to run two monitors, and got years of use out of it. At the time, I recall it being $100+, maybe more. Now they can be had easily for $10-20.

I didn't realize the ATI Rage128Pro wasn't compatible with the Cinema (widescreen) Apple displays. Not sure if there's some other incompatibility at work. But it does seem likely someone hijacked the stock card and replaced it with the ATI one. Since it's most likely not going to be set up connected to a display anyway, investing in a modest replacement card (that was considered powerful in its day) for low price seems like a safe enough bet, to see if it all works okay.
