There is something very wrong with the iMac. Nothing should take 40 plus bounces to launch. If you don't feel like taking this on yourself then by all means call Apple. They will probably just have you reinstall the OS, and if you have AppleCare you could run Tech Tool.
My guess is a wonky hard drive, make sure to back up your wife's data now.
