Concur with BGnR heartily on this. OWC Jamie can go into detail, but it has to do with controllers. Theoretically, USB2 is "just as fast or faster than FW400" but in real world usage, it's not even a contest. FW400 trumps it every time.

indeed, and go with FW800 if you can get it (afford it, if it's an option, etc.). You'll never say "man, I wish I had just gotten the slower connection".
The OWC Mercury drives are great, but I'll put in a vote for the OWC miniStack v3. Love 'em, lots of connectivity options, attractive package, never any problems. (YMMV.)
