Most trash collection agencies have a rule (it's either official or just spoken) not to take trash cans of any type as trash. I remember trash cans in one of the old neighborhoods I used to live in that looked like they'd been in a bombing but were still used as a viable can. If the trash man takes it, the thought is that now the company is liable to replace it because it wasn't actually trash.
Putting the can in an oversized bag sometimes works, as Mr Downtown said. Cutting it up is better. Seeing if it's recyclable plastic and taking it to a dropoff point is probably best.
